FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE CAREERS

Course Description:
 
This course introduces students to the exciting and varied career opportunities in the health care industry that will be in demand in their future! The course will introduce the roles and tasks, identify education and skills needed, identify responsibilities of roles which support or supervise their role, analyze legal and ethical responsibilities, limitations, and implications for each of these professions.

Module 1: Introduction to Healthcare Careers

This module looks at the history of healthcare, beginning with the ancients and moving through to our modern system today. This module will highlight some of the brilliant and innovative people who contributed to and changed healthcare throughout history, from the ancient Greeks to modern innovators. It will take a close look at healthcare in the United States, detailing how we arrived at our current system, and why it stands out from the rest of the world. Then students will get a chance to look ahead at the exciting changes that Artificial Intelligence and robotics are making in the field, and discuss how they will enhance the roles of healthcare providers worldwide.

Module 2: The Physician and Physician's Assistant

The Physician’s Assistant will be in demand in our future due to the responsibilities which may be shifted from the Physician to the Assistant.  This module will discuss the role of a Physician’s Assistant, or PA as compared to the Physician.  Students will learn about the education needed to become a PA and a Physician, the role of the PA and the Physician, the responsibilities of a PA and Physician, define quality health care within these roles, and identify the legal and ethical responsibilities and practices within these roles.  In addition, this module offers a full explanation and discussion the responsibilities associated with the HIPPA law.

Module 3: The Pharmacist

There is a lot more to being a Pharmacist than just putting pills into a bottle! Pharmacists are highly education professionals who are an integral part of the health care team. And importantly, their skills will be in high demand in 2030 and beyond! This module will discuss the role of a Pharmacist.  Students will learn about the education needed to become a Pharmacist, the role of the Pharmacist, the responsibilities of a Pharmacist, define quality health care within their role, and identify the legal and ethical responsibilities and practices within this role.

Module 4: The Physical Therapist

Physical Therapy is a high-growth healthcare field that is becoming more and more popular with patients today! This hands-on position helps patients who are suffering from injuries, diseases, disabilities, or limitations caused by old age. The benefit to this career is that it cannot be done by a robot and will always require a person to support patients utilizing new, exciting technology at every turn. This module will discuss the role of a Physical Therapist, or PT.  Students will learn about the education needed to become a PT, the role of the PT, the responsibilities of a PT, define quality health care within their role, and identify the legal and ethical responsibilities and practices within this role.

Module 5: The Healthcare Information Technology Manager

Who says you have to be a nurse or a doctor to have a positive impact in the lives of patients? The role of an IT manager is growing as technology allows for more efficient billing, records, and analysis.  This module will discuss the role of a Healthcare Information Technology Manager.  Students will learn about the education needed to become a Healthcare Information Technology Manager, the role of the Healthcare Information Technology Manager, the responsibilities of a Healthcare Information Technology Manager, and identify the legal and ethical responsibilities and practices within this role.

Module 6: The Occupational Therapist

Are you interested in education or social work?  This module will discuss the role of an Occupational Therapist, or OT.  Students will learn about the education needed to become an OT, the role of the OT, the responsibilities of an OT, define quality health care within their role, and identify the legal and ethical responsibilities and practices within this role.

Module 7: The Technician

As technology improves the industry needs trained technological professionals to operate that technology without error. Are you that person? This module will discuss the roles of Radiologic Technician, Medical Technologist, and Laboratory Technician. Students will learn about the education needed for these career paths, as well as the roles and responsibilities. Students will also define quality health care within their role and identify the legal and ethical responsibilities and practices within these roles.

Module 8: The Dentist

The future of dentistry is exciting and growing. Could you be a dentist? Students will learn about the education needed to become a Dentist, the responsibilities of a Dentist, define quality health care within their role, and identify the legal and ethical responsibilities and practices within this role.

Module 9: The Paramedic

Will there ever be a day when you call 911 and someone doesn’t come? No! The paramedic will be in high demand in the future much as they are now. This module will discuss the role of a Paramedic. Students will learn about the education needed to become a Paramedic, the role of the Paramedic, the responsibilities of a Paramedic, define quality health care within their role, and identify the legal and ethical responsibilities and practices within this role.

Module 10: The Nurse

What does the future mean for Nurses? This module will discuss the various roles associated with Nursing. Students will learn about the education needed to become a Nurse, the role of the Nurse, the responsibilities of a Nurse, define quality health care within their roles, and identify the legal and ethical responsibilities and practices within these roles.
